89 bronco seems to have quite a few problems.
The most annoying being that it has no power whatsoever.
With the truck in park I hit the accelerator and it takes a bit of time for it to climb in rpms. It doesnt really shudder or fight it, but it just creeps up in rpms so slowly. Almost like im just pressing the pedal slowly.
It also as no power during idle, If I put it in gear during Idle the truck usually dies, if it doesnt die turning the wheel while in gear certainly does the job.
I cleaned out the IAC and some other ends yesterday, didnt help much.
The only code it gives me is (33) Egr valve. SO I disconnected the rusty valve from the intake and plugged the hole, no change.
I notice there is oil in the air filter housing. When I thook the trhottle body off for cleaning there was oil behind it as well.
The guy who owned it before me did not take very good care of it.
Was outside earlier, adjusted the timing. Helped out a bit, not as much knocking.
Throttle reponds a bit better now.
Noticed a nice amount of smoke comming from pcv spout in filter box when reving while under a load(In drive, parking brake on).
The smoke had a gassey odor to it(not that kind ). Not to sure what to do next, was hoping the engine would be salvageable untill I could have it rebuilt, eh' maybe not. Thing smells like a friggin lawn mower.
A compression check is in order. Is there any evidence of water in the crankcase? Look under the oil filler cap and see if there is any whitish residue. Do a dry, then wet (a little oil in the cylinder) test. Cylinders should read similiarly. Post when done. It sure sounds like a compression issue.
On a curious note, have you checked the fuel pressure at the rail schraeder valve? Have you changed the fuel filter lately. (Bleed system prior to changing!)
Fuel filter is supoosedly new.
no residue, just a dry brown film.
I'll have to go get a compression check gauge monday.
If the compression is bad whats next ?
Same proble when I bought mine. Bad cylinder. Had it rebuilt runs great if those darn 35's weren't holding it back. Same symptoms as you though. Oil in airbox, smoke if blow bye disconnected, stuck erg, bad compression in # 8 . never died, just ran kinda *&%$. Hope everything works out. I had mine rebuilt for 1900, including new motor mounts and have to buy a new core.

The problem w/the #8 cyl is a very well known issue on some year range Broncos. I think Ford rearranged the intake vacuum lines or something to that effect, and had it resolved by the 93MY.
As far as the original posters questions......first thing would be a compression check. I would also find out when the last tune up was done.....check the PCV valve.......check to see if the cat(s) are clogged.....
when you set the timming.....you did remove the SPOUT right? I have my truck at the factory 10*BTDC....and I was thinking about going to 12* or 13* and see how she does.....but thats when I get to it.
these motors like at leat 12*btdc with spout removed for sure. anything above that you really have to move up in small amounts otherwise it will ping. 12 is a safe but noticable improvement
