Temp. gauge stays stuck at bottom when truck starts up and red warning light stays lit for up to ten minutes even in 40 degree weather. At some point needle pops up to appropriate level and light goes out. Where is the sending unit and is it worth the trouble and cost replacing?
It should be on the end of the intake manifold, next to the water outlet. To check it, while the engine is cold disconnect the wire from it and ground the wire. Turn on the igntion without starting the engine, the temp gauge should go to full hot. If it doesn't, then the promlem is elsewhere, prpbably the gauge itself. Most likely it is the sending unit though. As to whether or not it's worth the trouble and cost to replace, that's up to you to decide. When the weather gets warm again and the thing decides to quit completely, wouldn't you want to know if your engine's running hot or not? It's only about 20 bucks for the part, I'd do it. -TD
