my 76 f-250 4x4 has a 390 in it,it has been parked for a couple of months,i was going to make a dump run and about 20 miles into the trip i noticed white smoke pouring out underneath.not knowing if i was on fire i pulled over and crawled underneath i found buttloads of oil along the inside left side of the frame about even with the dipstick and dripping off the front driveline.i figured i had a bad head gasket so i replaced all the top end gaskets and oil pan gasket and pressure washed everything.took it for a spin and it still did it!!the only other thing i thought it could be was a half inch plug in the block,it was so tight i could not budge it,no oil around where the dipstick enters the pan, just inside the frame and on the driveline, and it only does it under acceleration, its giving me fits!!!!what could this be?
Have you checked the oil sending unit? I'm not exactly sure where it is on the FE engine. I would also check the oil filter and tranny lines for leaks.
there was disscussion about this not long ago, i think it turned out the guy had oil blowing out the dipstick, check the dipstick for a good seal at the top.....also make sure there isnt too much oil in it.........
Geeeze, I sure hope you won't need to have your heads & Block magna-fluxed to verify them being the problem.
Checking a 390 is definitely worth it though.
Had that on my 460 once. Pulled the whole motor for nothing and now I have a 514 in my mustang. My problem was a header burned through the dipstick. Check to see if anything may have worn a hole in the tube.
I had the 390 with the cracked dipstick. Definitely check that. Also the sending unit is in the front of the engine on the same side where the oil filter is on the 390. Check that too. Good Luck!
