Dont know if this has been asked or not but. Can you change a 351M into a 400? If so whats involved and would I be better off getting a 440 block? The truck is a 78 4x4 with edlbrock manifold and carb.
Thanks,
Bob

All that is required is a crank change. You can get one on ebay right now for $50.00, or you can trade yours for a crank kit with bearings from advance for $ 170.00.
Much cheaper and easier than a big block swap!
oops, im still asleep, you need to replace the pistons too. Another 60 to 150 bucks for those. still cheap in comparison.

If you bother doing this, consider using the Badger flat top pistons. This way you can add the badly needed compression that a stock 400 lacks. I rebuilt mine 8 years ago and these pistons were not available to my knowledge at that time. I know the engine would be much stronger had I done that.
I have a 78 bronco. It came with a 351M witch I blew a head gasket on. So I took a 351M block and heads, 400 crank, had it bored, line bored, heads done over, added an edelbroke intake and carb, with a low end cam. I could not believe the power out of it. It came out to be 402 cid.
