I have to replace the trans in my 92 150 ext.cab 4 wheel drive.
I have a little leak I think it is from the rear main in my 302.
Can I replace the rear seal once I get the trans out? Are there any tricks I should know about? What about the bearing?
I have not done this on a Ford, so cannot speak specifically on this. We have plenty of more knowledgable Ford guys on the list so I hope they see your post. You might also post it on the Engine page.
From doing this on two other engines(D#$%@ and Djapan), you are already half way there once the tranny is out so you might as well do it. This is the classical method in most shops anyway, ie pull the tranny to get to the seal. At least in my opinion.
I had to remove the pan and the rear cap on both those engines but I vaguely recall reading somewhere on this website that at least one of the Ford engines doesn't require dropping the pan, maybe you will have the lucky engine.
Most rear seals I have used were two piece rubber, just half moons really. You should be able to force out the old seal and push in a new one so long as you grease things up really good and DON'T USE ANY SHARP METAL OBJECTS near the journal surface or bearings, unless you are extremely careful. Really much easier to do if you can drop the crank out of the saddle just a little bit.
If you do remove one or more bearing caps be sure to retorque and use some thread lock if required.
Did it a year ago in my 92 ext cab 302 F150. I had the transmission place do it when they pulled the transmission. They do not have to pull the oil pan since it is the O ring type. Pull the flex plate and you are there after the transmission has been pulled. They only charged me $8.00 for the seal and threw in the labor since they were doing the transmission.Ti may be the pan but since you have the transmission out I would change the rear main seal.Good luck.
