Have a '96 F-150, 129,000 miles. Got it new so I know the history. Makes a horrible noise from the front when backing up and turning to the right, really bad if there is a bump. I also have those crossmember/frame creaks that seem to be common,still have to track those down, but this is different. Loud nasty creaking from front, and "clunk/rattle" on certain bumps. Had radius arm bushing replaced, better but didn't fix noise when backing up. Front end shop showed nothing visible when they looked, AND it sure enough was quiet when I was trying to demonstrate this noise. But it's still there believe me! Thanks for any info!!

Ford has a TSB on frame/crossmember creaks. Look for loose rivets. They need to be drilled out and replaced with grade 8 bolts. Email me at groper@eoncc.com and I'll send you a copy of the TSB with the procedure in detail.

I have to loosen & retighten all the trans crossmember & gusset bolts on my truck almost yearly to quiet the noise it makes . Its like over a yr or so the crossmember gets in a bind . Once all the bolts are loosened & retightened the noise is gone . The motor mounts , trans mount , All the other crossmembers are solid , no rusted or broken rivets . I did notice one note in my repair manual that stated all the crossmember , frame & gusset surfaces need to be free of any dirt , oil , grease etc before the trans crossmember bolts are tightened . I know the noise sounds like the truck is going to snap in two . One thing I did do this time is run a tap thru all the nuts to clean up the threads & ran the bolts thru a die to do the same .
