c-6 transmissions 1986 e-250

the van has a new rebuilt 4.9 l engine and putting alot of money into it just dosent make sense nor getting rid of it. is the c-6 transmission for the 4.9 liter common to other engines or does the c-6 transmission have to come from a 4.9 liter engine in a e-250 van?

It the same as the 302/351 C6 of the same era. Is it bad (the trans) or do you just feel that you must replace it? The C6 is pretty much bulletproof and last many many miles.

C6s are also pretty cheap to rebuild. There aren't a whole lot of parts in there.

yes i believe its the trany

i was 95 miles from home pulling a heavy trailer and while i was at a stop light begining to get up to speed the transmission would not shift up to the higher gears. i manually put it into 1 then 2 then drive and it would not shift to drive maybe not 2 because i could not go over 40 with out feeling the rpm was to high and wanted to at least get home. i kept it under 40 and got home.
after getting home i found it to not have reverse either. so this led me to believe it was the transmission and at least in need of an overhaul.
i have ordered a book on the rebuilding of a c-6 and want to at least try to rebuild it. should i get a super rebuild kit and look for blown parts or just try to identify the damaged parts? and replace as nessary.
also is the bolt pattern sb of fe ?

C6 Transmission

Once you get in there, you'll probably find that the master repair kit is the way to go.

FE and sb are two different bellhousing patterns.
A super rebuild/master rebuild kit should be the same.
Find one that lets you redo the valve body for towing.
If you're going to get the master kit, replace everything. Don't just replace parts that "look" bad. Some of the parts may "look" good, but you'll be really ticked off when you have to pull it out again.
Also, cleanliness is a MUST when rebuilding an automatic.
For rebuild kits, I'd look into TCI or B&M.
Check out the FTE online store first then try Summit or Jegs
