I'm having problems finding the right tools to remove the fan clutch on my truck, I need a 1 5/8" wrench that fits in the 1/2" space, my shop has the tool to hold the pulley, thats not a problem, but his wrench is too small, and the craftsmen 1 5/8" wrench I bought for $40 wasn't thin enough to fit in there...Do any of you guys have any bright ideas as to other ways that I can get the fan clutch off?
Just pulled my fan clutch off my '87 when I changed out the cam gear. teh craftsman wrench fit "TIGHT" width wise, had to fiddle with it rotating the fan around with it! NOTE: The threads are left handed.
Leave the belt on while you undo the clutch. Holds the water pump shaft still.
I have the belt on, and in `89 they changed the size, the tool I rented from the shop fit up to `89 models...with the larger wrench I bought that fits the nut, I had to take off 2 of the bolts on the fan and 2 from the water pump pulley, problem with that was rotating the wrench just turns the engine over, spins the pulley also, need the tool that goes over the bolts on the pulley to hold it from turning...but that tool doesn't hold when 2 bolts out of the 4 are off, guy at the shop is having a new tool shipped in thursday that will hopefully fit...this is getting ridiculous for such a *small* job!
