When weighing my options to replace the (5.0) engine in my '86, I was told that the 351 will get better MPG than the 302 in the same truck. That sounds like a great deal, more HP and MPG. Sounds pretty fishey though. Any input????
I've run both 351w and 302 in my current truck as well as in other trucks and as a rule, the windsor will give you better MPG than the 302, in the same truck. This is because the larger motor doesn't have to work as hard to move you. 302's are better suited to small cars where your RPM's will be higher. Longer stroke motors make their torque and power at lower RPM's which is better for trucks when your not often up in the high RPM's.
In my experience the 351 uses more gas than the 302 but that's mostly because I drive the 351 pretty hard because it goes nice :-)
1979 F150 Custom: nothing under the hood at all (again)
1987 F150 XLT Lariat: 88 351W EFI
75 351W: soon to have 91 heads, ?? cam, double roller timing chain, Edelbrock Performer intake & Holley carb and be put back in 79 F150
84 351W: waiting for ???
Chevy 454: waiting for a truck (Mazda?Nissan?)
I have a 92' F-250 with a 351/5.8
I also have a 94' F-150 with a 302/5.8
Not much of a difference at all in mileage. The 302 does come out ahead a little but it doesn't pull a heavier truck like the 351. The F-250 is also loaded with tools and has a plow rig on the front just to add to the weight being pulled around.
Il' tell you I just had a ford factory rebuilt 351w replaced
in my 90 bronco and it kicks ___ !
But the fuel consumption is unreal. It mauw's gas big time.
So you have to pay when you play.......(but it's worth it)
Good luck----------JC
It really depends on the condition of the motor and what it is in. My father had a 1995 F-150 regular cab 2wd with the 351/e40d and his got 15mpg stock. My 93 F-150 302 has always got atleast 18 stock. Now I'm way over that.
The only real reason why the 302 won't get better mileage is because it's worked harder, but that's only the case in towing and working conditions. For comutting use the 302 can and will get 3-4mpg better.
I just replaced my old 302 with a rebuilt 302. I also am running an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold with an Edelbrock 600cfm 4 barrel carbuerator. It`s some kind of sweet. As long as they sell gas I`ll run this package. Watching the people`s heads turn as I go by is worth it . My 85` F-150 is all I`ll ever want.
