After comming home from plowing last week, I realized after I got in my driveway that I had my "4X4 Hi" engaged since the last job. Problem is that on my way home the main road was dry and clear and trafic was moving about 60-65 mph. I was going pretty much straight the whole way so I didnt realize I still had 4X4 engaged. Its been about a week now and I havent noticed any differences in the way it drives. Does this mean Im o.k.,.... or did I probably hurt something?!!
Thanks!
Naw you should be good to go.The only thing that would have caused you a problem if you were making sharp turns on dry pavement. You can run it in 4x4 all day long on dry pavement with no problems as long as you didn't turn alot.Alot of times I engage mine in 4x4 in the summer going down the road to keep everything lubed and make sure it works when I need it.
You're probably quite OK. Not the best thing to do, but not gonna blow things up either. Doing this during high traction situations could produce some wheel hop when turning. You'd have felt that in your steering wheel. Your fuel economy will suffer when running with hubs locked in 4x4 just because you're turning more mass. In a turn, it forces your spider gears to work a lot harder. Thus some added wear on the side thrust bearings, universal joints, axle splines at both ends and the hubs themselves. If you'd have broken trackion in the front or rear, you could have damaged the transfer case. But there's a good amount of slop in these chain driven transfer cases that allows for some drivetrain takeup. Prolonged drives this way would eventually wear things out. But if you didn't break anything, (and you'd know it), on that trip, then just consider yourself lucky. I've actually done this, turned out of my driveway from ice onto dry pavement, goosed the throttle at the same time in the turn and snapped an axle.
If you never heard the 44 Magnum that's hiding under your hood, then chances are that you didn't damage anything.
