Hard shift...yep e4od

I have been working on my 92 f-350 for a while, runs good but im working on getting the bugs out. So now my tranny. No Tranny codes, and no o/d light flash etc. First thing in the morning cold, it shifts great. on downshift like to unlock the torq, it shifts great. Only problem is that is slams into gear when it warms up. I shouldnt say absolutly slams, but its pretty hard. Sometimes if i dont back out of it, it will go until almost 2700-3000 before it shifts, and then you better hold on.

I had no tach, so i replaced the tach sensor, fixed that. I had a code for VSS, so i replaced the VSS, and now no codes for it. I did notice though that frequently my speedo has a 4-5 mpg bounce. I did a full tranny service on it, and replaced the filter. Any ideas where to go next? it nevers looses lockup, or searches for a gear, it just slams during upshift, then downshifts ok.

No,timing changes shouldnt effect it,unless you inadverntly moved it.Make sure the plug didnt come loose when you set the timing.

i have heard that these trannies are very picky about fluids. Maybe ill try a different Mercon fluid. I think what im using is a cheap fluid

Standard Mercon/Dexron 111 is what you should use, a synthetic is allowed. DO not use Mercon V as it is not recommended by Ford for E4OD. The bouncing speedo has me concerned as it tells the PCM whats happening after getting VSS info. Check all the connections also the PSOM. Do you have OEM size tires...

yeah its a dually, i think 215/60/16. Standard size tires. I am using Walmarts bulk Mercon in the gallon jugs, i should have known when i poured it and its a light red, as opposed to some of the better, darker red mercon fluids. Can the problem also be in the wiring to the VSS, i have heard about that corroding. The tranny is fairly new, and i dont want to kill it while its still doing good( not slipping)

Walmarts is as good as anyones, there are several oil companies who bottle everyones oils so don't sweat it.

Check all the connections especially the one on the right side with the tin cover, remove the tin heat shield, remove the solenoid connector by pushing on the center tab and pulling up on the wireharness. Always reinstall the tin heat shield.

i scanned it before work, and got code 23 FIPL out of range. i cleared and retested, had hard fault, i then held at WOT and still had same 23 code. When i reset it, I was able to get within spec at WOT but i was a tad low at idle. Should i put a new one on? lol its going on anyways, but anything else to look for?

The main thing to ensure is the idle speed is as per the valve cover, for auto it is around 650rpm IN GEAR for curb idle. So set that first.......

Check the rear end VSS, and or the one on the trans. From what I understand, the VSS can be going out, that will give you erratic shifts. When mine started shifting hard the O/D lite did not come on for a week. I thought it was low on fluid.

Forgot to mention all FIPL/RPM adjustments are on a warm engine.......

The MLPS would present a 67/634 Out of gear range or 67/654 Not in park codes.

well i set my idle speed when warmed up, and replaced the fipl. low reading 1.09 high reading 4.0 took it for a test drive after doing a thermostat too, and it shifted great, no problems at all. first time i have felt that in my truck since i got it last year. thanks to everyone.

BTW, what causes a tick/knock on the back side of the engine? i hear it most at and slightly above idle, but dont hear it on the highway, unless coming to a stop. i cant hear it under the hood, but hear it in the cab from the bellhousing area. as of right now, the truck runs great, normal smoke. NORMAL shift, and everything. are these things known for exhaust leaks?
Thanks again
