Aloha,
Recently i have been having an acceleration problem with my 02 F150 4.6L 2By.
The situation only got frustrating when i tried all the usual suspects, ie: scan (w/no trouble codes), tune-up ( plugs, filters, etc) resistance and volt readings on all sensors and constant reading of post's on-line. Needless to say, I'm ready to take my truck surfing (literally) in 20 foot sets...........................................
truck hesitates, stumbles and backfires on acceleration, most noticeable when slowing down and reaccelerating from 30mph and above
My Question?????.....Is there anyone that has had this happen and/or found the cause?
Any Insight to this matter would be greatly appreciated !!!
If the timing was off then there would be a problem with your computer. It makes adjustments constantly to the timing to attempt a smooth run, BUT...The mention to the COPs sounds like it is the problem. There have been known issues with specific COPs causing problems due to location, moisture etc. If you have spent the money for the other stuff, then replacing COPs won't be a biggie. I believe that the number 3 and 4 are the most problematic. Start replacing one at a time until you find the problem COP. You may have more than 1 problem COP so I would just start replacing them. At least 2 then move then to different locations until you find the problem one. THere is a way to test but I am not sure of the procedures. Do a search in this forum for COP and you will find more then enough info to choke a horse.
WOW, I am feeling "Da Love" in this house. Thank you very much for the welcome !!!!!
As far as the cops go, I cant out run them, just kidding, I had them all on my multi meter and all came up to spec's. The only thing i could not do was to test them under
actual driving conditions, but all of your advice is worth its weight in gold because all the information that i am "choking" on seems to point to the cops. Checked the EGR valve and all is well.
Mahalo nui loa to all
Will let everyone know how the story ends....................................ALOHA

I've got the same problem less the backfiring. Mine is more like a constant miss through entire rpm range and the stumble is most noticable when kicking down out of overdrive when less than 2,000 rpm's. I've done all of the same tests with the volt / ohm meter and everything checks out. I even had the truck at Ford a few weeks ago and had them check it out. Also had them download all of the latest TSB's but didn't fix the problem.
I was reading in another forum that the silicone boots (on the cop's) are very sensitive to pinholes and cracks and could cause a "Misfire". I've ordered a set of these for my truck and should have them on Monday or so. I've tried just about everything but, with no codes, you're kind of forced to start troubleshooting everything item by item. Hopefully this works because at $49.00 at Autozone and much higher at Ford per "cop" it gets quite costly!
Just out of curiosity, what readings did you come up with on the cop primary and secondary? The Haynes Manual says: 0.55 on primary, and 5500 ohms on the secondary. I came up with 0.6 primary, and 5400 on secondary on everyone including an extra set of cop's from an 02 Mustang GT that I have.
This is where I am at right now. I re-tested all cops and got "normal" (according to the ford dude) readings. Secondaries on all cops were at 5400 and primarys on 1,2,3,5,6,7,8 were at 0.6. The #4 cop gave me a primary reading of 0.45. so i decided to change the odd cop-out(theres a joke in there some where)
GUESS WHAT? It accelerates like it used to. But, I'm not drawing any conclusions just yet.
The story continues....................................
That's Great! Now you know where you stand on the cop issues. I'm also happy to hear that you and I have the same readings because they differ from the Haynes Manual slightly. I'll let you know how mine does on Monday when my new silicone boots come in.
