2003 4r70w

Greetings all,

I just purchased a 2003 F150 Supercrew 5.4L with the 4R70W trans and 20,500 miles.

The transmission shifts just as smooth as glass up and down the gears. So smooth that sometimes I never notice the shifts.

The problem I am having is during braking. At the last second just before dead stop, I'll hear and feel a 'thunk' (thud and clunk) from either the transmission or somewhere else in the drivetrain. If also feels as if the tranny has a sudden last second surge in power just before dead stop even though my foot has been on the brake the entire time.

If I come to a stop and I'm using a feather touch on the brake very very slowly rolling to a complete stop there is no problem felt or heard. But, under normal braking conditions, just before dead stop I get that 'thunk'.

Has anyone else experienced this or have an idea of what might be the problem? Am I headed for a serious transmission problem or is this just indicative of this model vehicle.

Thanks in advance!

I am experiencing the same symptoms you are. I have 63000 miles on my 01 Supcrew 2x4. I've been looking on this forum to see if anyone has had the same issue and hopfully some answers too.

That may be caused by a sticky driveshaft spline at the transmission. Ford has a special lube to put in the female side of the yoke that will fix it.
