recently my truck has been having vibration problems. it starts at about 15 mph and gets worse the faster you go. at first I repalced the u joints and carrier bearing but that didnt seem to help. i even spun the wheels on a lift but could not pinpoint where the vibration was coming from. so then i took off the wheels and spun the drivshaft and there was still a vibration then i took off the drums and spun it again, no difference. during all of this i noticed that the axles had a little bit of play in and out. i dont know if this is normal. any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Do you have any weights on the drive shaft? Most have to have weights somewhere on them and it is a possibility that they weight came off. There normally is a little play in the rear axles from end to center (so that you can get the c clip on in the diff). I would check the driveshaft. You could have an output shaft bearing issue on the tranny as well. I doubt that is the case, but if you work from the tranny back, you're sure to identify the problem area.
Seems you've narrowed it down to the driveline, after you check the weights on the shaft I would pull it and make sure none of the u-joints have any tight spots.
thanks, im bringin it in to my shop tomarrow so hopefully ill be able to pinpoint where its commin from. it feels like the vibration is comming from the rear of the truck so is it possible that it is comming from the diff or the axles? just an idea
It's possible the the pinion yoke nut (I'm beat, but the nut that holds the yoke on the diff) came loose. Check that. The bearings in there have to be pre-tensioned (not sure if that is the exact definition) and then the nut has to be loosen to spec. If that bearing is shot, it will give you a horrible vibration, or even if the nut is loose. Other than that, there really isn't anything in there that would do that. Since you still had the vibration with tires off, etc and no weight on the axle bearings, you can rule them out. I'm almost certain that the problem lies within the yoke area.
thats alot i really dont know much about differentials but what your saying sounds very reasonable when i get to working on the truck ill check that nut.
My 1979 had a terrrible vibration from somewhere in the rear, it turned out to be the nut on the yoke that holds the driveline, it was loose because the pinion seal was gone it leaked and the front and rear pinion bearings were warn out. Replaced all that, was base, cost $380 in a shop, drives smooth and quit, so I agree with jbalestri comments.
