Have an '85 F350 1 ton dually with 460. Took the engine to the machine shop and we discovered that this year has 3 possible gasket sets. How do I determine the year of the engine? Is it an '84 or earlier, mid '85 or late '85?
There is no 'date of manufacture' sticker on the door post only the VIN label.
I decoded the VIN and it only tells 1985 for vehicle but not engine date.
I pulled some numbers off the block, maybe they'll make sense to somebody:
5E24 - this number is cast
5F17LS - this number was stamped with a hammer stamp not cast
116-117 - this number is cast in the front right
13579 - this number was cast in circular pattern in the lifter valley
if the stamped number 5F17 is on the front face of the block, between the deck and the timing chain cover on the passenger side of the block, that is the date they actually began building the engine. this info is from tom monroe's book on rebuilding these engines and i have 3 blocks with stampings in that location... June 17, 1985. casting date should be in the valley of the block between lifter bores and should be the 5E24 casting, May 24, 1985. cheers, garsten
