I have a 1991 ford explorer, and recently I have had a problem with the automatic transmission when it is cold. It stays in first gear for about 2 minutes while driving, then will shift and drive normal. I just serviced the transmission, no difference.
Any ideas??
Oh no. I hope your situation doesn't turn out like mine. I had the same problem several months ago. When cold, you had to rev it up and release the gas for it to shift. Once it warmed up, it shifted fine.
I changed the fluid and filter. I changed the vacuum modulator. Neither fixed the problem. About 2 weeks ago, was driving down the road fine, then it suddenly slipped out of gear. I now how no gears and the vehicle has been sitting ever since. It makes a whirring sound when I put it in gear. It crawls along (about 1 inch every 30 seconds). Obviously, it's not driveable. The fluid looks fine. I don't know what else to try.
Now, I'm saving up $$$ to have it towed to a tranny shop (AAMCO, or maybe somewhere cheaper). I hope I don't need a complete rebuild, but I'm guessing that's the case. Don't want to tow it somewhere and not be able to pay for the repair...
Here's my advice. I had some clowns work on my last two Ford transmissions. Neither worked right ever again. Take it somewhere that has certified people doing the work. It might be something simple, or it might cost you $2000. Either way you need it fixed right. Shop around and then borrow the money if you have to. You'll sleep better. Check out some other threads in here. There may be an answer somewhere. My current tranny is starting to leak fluid. I'm taking it in now instead of waiting for the eventual failure.
