Ok this is my problem/question..I've a 302/5.0L engine, making about 230Hp. If I go for a S.C. it'll increase a min. of 35%Hp to the engine at a cost of about $2500; compression ratio stock is 8:1 or close to it (if i get intercooler prob. more). But if I try to go for a 347 engine kit (boring out the block) with Trickflow heads (61cc) and a new camshaft that will fit the application making a compression ratio of 10.4:1 what do you think will be my Hp increase if any? all this will be at about $4500. So you see, budget/power is my dilema!
I think the supercharger would cost a lot more in secondary costs. I don't think it would be wise to drop one on a tired block....I know I wouldn't on mine. Plus, you would need to look into fuel and spark add-ons I believe to get the most out of it.
I'd gfo with the stroker. This way, you have a fresh block and heads, and maybe while building it, keep in mind that when the money comes your way you may want to reconsider that S.C. and drop it on top of the stroker. Now, you'd have a fresh block, and would be starting from a much better hp number.
In short, I'd go for the stroker. Not too sure about the numbers, but it'll make more then what that 302's making now. Check around here and the 302 forum, I know it's been talked about.
your gonna have to upgrade to mass air to run a stroker. the speed density system wont run it. also your 302 puts 230hp at the flywheel and 180 at the rwheels.I agree that an sc at this stage is asking for a short life for your motor. why not swap in a 5.8 for the cost of that motor with a set of heads, cam, intake , throttlebody and headers will put you at the same cost as building a stroker that still needs mass air and wont have as much power. then down the road you could stroke the 5.8 to a 393 go mass air then and be well into the 400 mark both for hp and torque.
the 5.8 swap is easy and is really the way to go for more power.
late
Write this day down on the calendar. I hafta agree with you on this one. If you are looking at putting that kind of power up without as many budgetary constraints, then the 351 swap is probably the most cost-effective method in the long run.
The general conscensus regarding adding a S/C to an older engine is a good one. Avoid it or end up swapping it in a few months anyway.
