1980 F250 VIN Decoding

I can't seem to decode the vin on a 1980 F250 4X4. I have no clue what engine is in it etc. Carfax won't accept the vin, and it seems like all vin decoding sites out there have a void from 79-82. Can someone help please.

The vin is

First, I can tell you that you are missing a number. All VIN#s are 16 digits, you only have 15, and I can even tell you which is missing! All Fords start either "1F" or "2F", "1F" is built in america, "2F" is built in Canada.

As for the engine, the 8th number/letter is the engine position, which would be the "A" in the number provided if you added the first number in. But, "A" is not listed for that year so you may have read it wrong.

It should be one of the following:
B or K=300 inline 6cyl
G =302
H = either 351W or 351M
S = 400
J = 460

Good luck!

Mstarr:

You're spot on, but wasn't the "S" code for 400 car applications and the truck application code a "Z"? Not to be a smart alec, just curious.

All the Best,
Ernie

In my chilton book wich covers 76-86 ford pickups, it says that the codes are as follows for 1980:

E: 300 I6
F: 302 V8
G: 351 V8
S: 400 V8
A: 460 V8

mstarr
Were did you get thoes codes, because according to my book, the only one that is right is the "S", although it looks like you might have the codes for 79.
In my book it says that 1979 is
B: 300 I6
K: 300 HD I6
G: 302 V8
H: 351 M or W V8
S: 400 V8
A: 460 V8

And with this thing about the 400 V8' according to my book, it was an "S" from 78 till 80, then in 81 it was turned into the "Z", I don't have anything for it after that.

So, if my book is right then you have the 460, a nice strong gas hog of an engine, if it is the original engine. From what I have seen, the 351, 460, and 302 swap around pretty eaisily, the only thing is that the trans bolt pattern is a little different in the 460.

One other thing, there are only 11 digits in that vin code, and my book says that there should be 17 and they are as follows:

The first 3 are manufacturer make and type
The 4th is the brakes
The 5th, 6th, and 7th are mdel line, series, chassis, cab or body type.
The 8th is the engine
The 9th is the check digit
The 10th is the model year
The 11th is the assembly plant
The 12th has to do with the sequence #, it is an A until you reach 99,999, then it turns to a B and then a c and so on.The 13th through 17th are the sequence #.

So according to my book, you are missing about 6 digits, and so it is hard to tell what you have, because the A we were mistaking as the engine code, could be the first part of the sequence # if there was 1 more digit behind it. But that would mean that your engine is a code 6, and there is no such thing. So try to get the rest of the # posted and we will see what we can do from there.

P.S. if that is the same # you were putting on Carfax, that is probably why it ws rejecting it.

That's a pre standardized 11 digit vin, The 17 digit ones started in 1981.
F26 = F250 4x4
6 = Engine code, but, 6 is not right. Could it be G? G = 302
P = Assembly Plant = Twin Cities
TA0841 = Assembly sequence code

It's definatley NOT a 460. Engine options for an 80 F250 were the 300, 302, 351M and the 400.
