my truck has been sitting since before Christmas, I started her up last week and she was running.. but not good, the whole truck was shaking real bad, so I checked the plugs and they seemd due, so I changed the plugs and adjusted the fuel and air inlets on the carb, and she was purring like a kitten, went for a little spin to get gas everything was great, pulled out of gas station and she stalled, but started right back up with no problems.
Yesterday go out to take a ride and same thing real rough start-up, truck shaking (but not as bad), the carb back fired once, and she just sounded a little bogged down. I've been meanig to change my thermostat to a 195 because what is in there now is a "fail safe" what ever that is.
My temp gauge barely moves to 140 or 150.
My oil pressure gauge is reading at 35 psi
No leaks, of any kind.
New fuel pump and filter.
Holley 650 carb.
I'm thinking worse case senerio is worn rings.
I would apprieciate any diagnosis so I can call a couple of places for prices.
thanks,
Jeff
After sitting I would suspect varnish in the carb or condensation in the gas tank. Try a can of dry gas and if it doesn't work try taking the carb apart and cleaning it.
Could be a leaking power valve in the carburetor. Back when I had a '82 F100, I put in a '68 302 factory 4 bbl engine, that I rebuilt, and installed a Holley 600. Had to replace the power valve every so often. Holleys and Motorcraft carburetors and bad about leaking power valves. I ran a 180* thermostat.
Thanks for the suggestions, seems an easier fix then tearing into the engine.
I forgot to mention when I pulled the plugs them seamed a little fouled, I couldn't tell if it was gas or oil though.
I changed rotor, cap, coil and plugs, cranked engine to TDC, because the distibutor just didn't seem like it was in the right position. started'er up, and everything was fine. I shut her down, to check plugs for fouling, looked good, put the plug back in and tried to start'er back up, and nothing, checked under the cap and the rotor was pointing due east. So I recranked the engine to TDC and start back up everything was fine......... a little high idle but still running. so i let'er run for 20 minutes, shut'er off and she started back up. shut'er down, start'er up, shut'er down, still good.
why would the rotor reposition itself?
and the last turn on the key, the started was sounded like it was dying.
Just keeping everybody up to date.
