I have a 7.3 Turbo Diesel and what happens is the truck seems like it is knocking or having piston slap on the right side of the block. It sounds irregular from the rest of the cylinders. I was wondering what would be a good additive to help with this? I was also thinking that it could be misfiring what would be your suggestion to cleaning out the injectors. I have some marvel and engine restore but people are telling me that I should just chuck those and get Diesel Kleen and some new push tubes. What are your suggestions.
I am supposing that the year is a 93-94 factory turbo?? How many miles on the engine? You could be hearing an injector not working properly - leaking early and causing the fuel to fire too soon. GEt it up to op temp .. shut it off ... loosen all the injector lines and resnug them ... start the engine at idle break all the lines one ata time ... watch for lots of air bubbles in the leaking fuel. That will prob be the bad injector. That noise should also go away when you loosen the line. Might be a valve problem. Might be a rod bearing problem. How heavy a knock is it? Does it do it all the time or just at start up?
This truck is a factory IDI Turbo Diesel. It now has 200,550 Miles on it now. It isn't too bad I wish I could explain it. Basically it is noticeable during cold mornings and quiets down when it warms up. But Never really goes away. It doesn't sound like a rod knock. It is quiet enough when you drive it and it is warmed up somewhat, it will almost blend in with the rest of the Diesel racket.
A weak injector can make a noise like a lower end knock. Like stated crack each injector line nut 1/2 turn(cover with a rag) and see if the noise ever goes away.
