dana 44 hd??
hi everyone,
this probably belongs in one of the other forums but you guys are extremely knowledgeble and id rather ask you. my 74 highboy has a d44hd i think but i just want to make sure. it has the encloses steering u-joints and the big lockouts, along with the garrison power assist. at some point in the future i would like to change both the power assist steering and the enclosed u-joints along with the drum brakes in the front. i have the axle tag in my hand and i remember a thread a while back that had a website to decode the nubers on the axle tag but after an hour and a half of searching, i just give up. any help would be great. thanks

There is a number of people here who have done what you are talking about. I remember that one guy here has a bunch of pics of the PS conversion. As far as the axle, you may be able to save $$ in the long run by swapping it out for a newer one that already has discs and open knuckles. Welcome, and good luck

If it does youve got the Dana 44 HD, same thats in my truck.
I was also thinking on swamping in a dana 60 front...because it would be a strait swamp other then the brake booster. But im going to trade the truck for an F350.

76 and 77 highboys had an open knuckle disk brake 44 hd. perfect for swapping out that drum brake closed knuckle front.just bolt it in. steering conversion is fairly simple. just did a d60 swap in front of my 74 highboy and will be doing steering conversion shortly.
