I checked the tech articles, but didn't see anything about turning brake rotors. My 2001 F-150 Supercrew is due for its first brake pad change at 75,000 miles. The rotors are not scored and are smooth, but I'm sure they're glazed. My question is: do I turn them or do I use steel wool to knock the glaze off? Any recommendations on pads? I was thinking of going to the dealership and just buying just the OE pads unless there are aftermarket pads that are better.
Personally, I don't turn the rotors unless they are warped. I have done it this way on my last 2 vehicles, and plan on doing it that way in the future.
Have not had any problems with braking or brake wear doing it that way.
I usually scuff my rotors if they are not warped. I use a piece of emery cloth and spin the rotor and just scuff it up a bit. I have had real good luck with Autozone's new Duralast pads. They are OEM quality and produce very little brake dust on the wheels.
