need some advice on how to remove the spindle on my 4x4 i am replaceing the ball joints this is the first for me on 4x4 and i do have the book on drivetrain. after the hub it said to remove the bolts on the spindle i removed the them and than the brake sheild it just about fell off but the spindle will not come off i hit it with hammer is this typical do i have to hit this to break it loose and than do i have to pull the axelshaft to press the bearings in
There is a puller that is used with a slidehammer that makes the removal quite painless, it should be available at any major parts store,
I have used a deadblow hammer, the plastic hammer won't damage the threads but it can still be a lot of work.
thanks for the info their is a groove on the spidle is that were the slide hammer goes and do i just hammer it stright out dose it just pop out when it brakes loose
thanks bob

the tool should thread onto the spindle then you slide hammer it off (no groove)
I don't know if I can explain this correctly, but... The spindle has a small collar on the other side that you can't see. It fits into the hole in the knuckle that the axle is also coming through. From the inside, you can see the edge of that collar. You can use a drft with a 3 lb hammer to hit the collar from the inside out. you really have to crawl in there and look, but basically the edge of the hole surrounding the axle is part of the spindle, so if you bang on it, it will start to force the the spindle off the bolts. All you need to do is get it started, then you can start working it off from the outside.
