Need some help. 86 F150 302 eecIV. Runs good when cold, like cold startup.
Starting in the heat of the day, starts good and then while in traffic starts running rough... missing. Checked KOEO memoery codes.. code 18.. loss of spout. I'm think I need a new ignition module. Seems like when it's hot, something is crapping out. Anyone with some ideas or this kind of experience. New ECT TPS IAC MAP. Computer 1 year old.
my '85 did pretty much the same thing probably about 3months ago. would run good cold, as soon as it got hot, would start running like crap.when trying to start out from a stop sign, when you hit the "go pedal" the truck would buck & sputter turned out to be ignition module & pick-up coil were both bad. changed them both been running fine ever since.
Are you talking about the ignition coil? Or PIP in distrubuter?
I changed the ignition module with a used one I had that I knew was good. Same thing, except worse, bucking and all when hot. I think I made a mistake when installing it. I didn't have the white dialectic grease so I used the clear dialectric tune-up grease used to put on spark plug boots etc. Ran fine fine cold, put when hot ran worse than before. What's the purpose of this grease? I'm assuming it keeps the ignition module cool while making a ground connection. I have an Accel coil but am thinking I should go back to standard coil.
I've got an 86 laritXLT extra cab, long bed and want to keeep it on the road.
the pip inside the distributor was bad, along with the module. so i changed both at the same time. the dielectric grease, i believe does keep the module cool. in my case the green wire on the pick-up coil was almost burnt in half.
Thanks for the tip xltlariat87. I changed the distributor with a rebuilt and put my used module on, re-timed it and .... so far so good. If ya don't hear back in a couple of days... That was the problem part... pickup in the distributor.
