My mom's 92 Ranger 4.0L...
when you turn the key, the starter solenoid clicks. Someone suggested the starter solenoid, so I replaced it today for $8.00. Same thing. Any help? (battery is fine)
the battery is two weeks old. I guess if the new battery were installed on a poor alternator, it would probably be weak already -- so it could be the alternator or something else. However, i think that the battery is fine (lights work, no dimming, push starts easily)What usually happens if a starter is bad?
My first inclination would be a bad cable. Check all the connections first to see if they are firm and solid. I had similar symptons with my Ford Taurus. I jumpered each heavy duty cable in the starter circuit by using one wire of my battery jumper cable set. Sometimes an assistant helps to engage the starter after you short around a cable. Because the circuit is not drawing any current there will be no dimming of the lights when you hit the starter. Starter circuits draw a lot of current. If not a cable, I would say you're looking at a bad starter. Good luck!
One of the first things I do when ever I have a problem with a starter is smack it with a hammer. This frequently allows me to start the vehicle and get it in the shop. Reason
brushes are worn to the point one or more don't hit the commutator. Makes it easier
to work on when it is in a warm shop. May work once don't get greedy! Put in brushes a
bushing or two and down the road we go.
