Front end vibration

A few days ago I was driving down the freeway with no problems until I reached 70 MPH. At that point the front end began shaking violently. The steering wheel was shaking so hard I could barely hold on to it. I immediately slowed down and the problem went away. I reached the same speed later that day and several times since and it has not happened again. Any ideas? It is a 2000 Ranger Extended cab 2-wheel drive 3.0L.

Maybe something simple like a rock in the tire or bad road conditions?

Maybe you had something stuck in the rim, etc and it caused an out of balance condition, and it fell off at some point later. Have you checked the front end for excessive play?

The road conditions were fine. It is a freeway I travel every day and the front end is tight. Maybe your thoughts that it was a rock or other foreign object is the answer. I was just concerned that it may be a sign of something worse to come. Thanks so much for your responses.
