OK here is my dilema, I have a 4.6L that overheats. I thought it was an air pocket so I drove with the cap tightened half way until I heard it boil over and then I tightened it thinking that solved the problem. it didn't. now everytime I get on it I hear this pinging sound right before the needle skyrocket to red. when I get home i leave it running and check under the hood to feel the hoses and they don't feel extremely hot but they are pressurized and hot and then I get back in the truck and the needle is back at normal. The technician I took it to said it was a head gasket because of the white smoke coming out of the tailpipe and because the resevoir was empty. what do you guys think?
A large amount of white smoke out of the tailpipe is burning antifreeze indicative of a blown head gasket. Is it a lot of smoke or just a little, which could just be water vapor depending on how cold the air temperature is. Burning antifreeze has a noticeable odor at the tailpipe and the smoke tends to hang and be fairly thick. If the reservoir is needing to be continually refilled then you are losing coolant into the motor. Also, check your oil level to see if it is above full and if the oil has a milky color which is indicative of coolant in the oil. Antifreeze in the oil will eat up the engine bearings.
Hey thanks Jtmerrit, after reading your info I went ahead and tackled the head gasket. I had no idea it was going to be this hard. I've already taken off the exhaust and the valve covers and the intake is unbolted but not off yet because it got too dark. All I have left is the head and the timing cover. I sure hope it all goes back together faster than it takes to pull apart. I hope all this can be done in the next 3 days because I need it for school on monday.
If you or anybody else has any tips or suggestions I would like to hear them.
You should not have to pull the timing cover to pull the heads. If you are wanting to repace the timing chain and gears because of wear OK but it doesn't have to come off. Just trying to save you some time. Make sure the heads and block surfaces are checked with a starightedge to make sure they are flat and true. Also, have the heads checked for cracks.
