Earlier this winter our '00 explorer developed a loud noise which comes from the air filter box and the tube leading to the air intake manifold. This is an intermittant sound that only occurs at idle (600-700 RPM) ( and not all the time)and goes away when engine comes off idle. The auto repair shop checked for vacuum leaks around the engine compartment and even took the intake manifold off and resealed it. Still a periodic noise.
The other symptom is that when engine is cold and temp is cold (10 degrees F or colder), the fast idle will set and run ~1000-1200 RPM but when it trys to idle down to normal idle, the engine runs rough like lean or rich burn conditions. You have to press on the excellator to keep it running. After a few cycles of this (3-5 x's) the engine will idle on it's own.
The air filter is clean and not noticeable restrictions in tube leading from air filter box to intake manifold.
I'm wondering if the plastic chamber (I'd call it a resonator eliminator, don't know what the official name is) that hangs off the side of the rubber intake tube is cracked or not sealed where it plugs into the tube. Just a thought...........
I had a 2000 Contour that made a loud noise during cold weather idling, it is commonly reffered to as "moosing". Either way the only real fix is to replace the IAC. You could easily pull your IAC off and clean it real good with some carb cleaner and make sure it is in fact the noise, it may last for quite some time just with a good cleaning, but eventially it will need replaced.
Is it like a loud whistling/howling? I had a '97 Explorer that did that, and I never figured out what it was. It would do it below about 1000 rpm's, but if you accelerated at all it would stop, even for a split second with the brake on at the stoplights (where it would make the noise) I had all of the air intake checked and the air filter replaced (even tried a couple different brands) but still to no avail. But here's the weird part- it was the worst between 40-70 degrees, not above it or below it. O well, it didn't affect how the car ran and it was an excuse to "gun it" (to make the noise go away, of course...)
Thanks for the suggestions. You have confirmed what I was thinking - suspect IAC control.
Think I'll try that because the mechanic couldn't find any vacuum leaks and yes the "moosing" noise (yes, sounds like a bellowing moose!!!) seams to occur between 30 and 60 degrees only at idle below 1000 RPMs.
Bes tdescription I could give for the sound mine made was that it sounded like my clothes dryer was running under the hood but louder. Exact same problem description as yours. It was the IAC.
