1988 Ranger will not start
123,000 miles
Bought the truck a couple of weeks ago had the dreaded lifter tick. Started and ran good but made a lot of noise. This weekend I pulled the valve covers off and reset the valve lash (0 lash and then 1-1/2 turns) put it back together with new dist cap/rotor, plugs & wires. Old plugs were black and sooty. Several plug wires came apart while removing. Contacts on cap and rotor were heavily worn.
Did NOT remove distributor or adjust ignition timing.
Truck will not start. I will turn over until the battery is dead but no signs of life. I have good spark and appears to have fuel (will check pressure tonight). It does backfire and shoot flame out of intake pretty often while cranking. No codes were stored.
Checked to verify plug wires were in proper firing order. rotor in distributor turns while cranking engine.
Any ideas or thoughts on what could be causing the no start condition.

Firing out the intake would tell me that the the ignition is trying to fire when the intake valves are open. This would not be a good thing. Check, and then re-check your wires.
Thanks
