94 Explorer Sudden Decrease in Gas Mileage...any ideas?

My '94 Eddie Bauer has recently suffered a huge decrease in fuel economy. In October I was getting 330 miles per tank, and now I'm lucky to get 220 miles out of a 16 gallon tank. Check engine light come on and off intermittenly, and I think I've lost overdrive.

Any ideas what the culprit could be? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I just found this site last night, what a great resource!

If your O/D isn't working and you do mostly highway driving, there's your answer.
My '04 has a fuse for O/D; if you have your Owner's Guide, check it out.

Welcome to FTE!!!

Have the codes pulled. There's a sticky in the ranger forum with instructions to use an analog voltmeter or a paper clip to get the codes. All kinds of sensor problems could cause fuel efficiency problems.

Here's a link to the ranger thread...

Second thing after pulling codes, is to pull the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulator, and see if raw fuel is present. If the diaphram starts to leak on the FPR, fuel will be sucked into the intake manifold, causing rich codes and ruining fuel mileage.
