One of our work trucks (2001 Ford Ranger) had the air bag light on the dash come on shortly after purchasing it new from the dealer. We took it to the dealer to get it fixed, and they said that the clock spring needed to be replaced. What is a clock spring, and what is its purpose?
Thanks,

A clockspring is nothing more than several wires formed into a flat tape shape and coiled so that the steering wheel can turn and the wires will coil and uncoil and not loose the connection for the air bag circuit.

I think I screwed it up when I whipped the steering wheel when going around a tight right hand turn at about 15 to 20 miles per hour in order to avoid an accident (too fast). I thought that the air bag should have gone off, but it didn't (that's when the light came on). At least they covered the repair under the factory warranty.
Thanks for your help.
