I will be picking up a new to me boat this week. I think it weighs in around 3000lbs. My driveway is a slight uphill grade. I always use 2wd Low Range when I back my utility trailer around. I have read in 4Wheeler magazine that using 2WD Low is a good way to snap an axle. I would like to use 2 Low to back in and pull up the boat ramp. Anyone see any problem with doing this if I'm easy on the gas?
Breaking axles in 4 Low can be easy if you get the truck in a position that places a lot of torque on the front axles . Backing , towing your boat shouldnt do that but then agian you really shouldnt need to use 4 Low . 4 High would be plenty for pulling the boat up a slick incline such as when you pull it out of the water , just to gain a little traction . On dry roads & the added weight towing your boat you should be able to back the boat up your driveway w/o using any 4x4 .
i had a '90 f250 with a manual tranny. i got along fine using 2-low as long as i took it easy on the gas. if i got my cattle trailer full and got too rowdy on the gas i'd tear motor and trans. mounts apart.
I think shotgun means using 4Lo with the front Hubs unlocked. I don't think it is easy on the transfer case to have the front unlocked but I don't see how any more than 50% of the power would go to the rear axle. If you take it easy on the RPM's...it would probably be ok.
Gentelman: I should have been more clear. I was refering to the unlocked front end and using low range for short slow speed manuvering and backing around obstacles when the grip of 4WD is not needed. I hate to slip the clutch. (One reason why I chose the manual transfer case/manual hubs) As far as the rear axle goes: Would the torque be much different than a ZF 5spd in granny low?
With any luck I'm off to the lake this weekend. I will report any catastophic failures.
I do this all the time (X-fer case in 4-lo w/ hubs unlocked). Over 4 vehicles, I've never had a problem. It's a great way to get some extra low gearing for manuevering. Just be gentle on the throttle and you'll be fine.
