oil filter placement

I have a 98 f 150 4x4 with a 4.6 triton engine. I am trying to change the oil but can,t locate the oil filter. I looked in haynes manual and didn't see it either. I also asked local auto store. They didn't know as well. If anyone knows, any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

The 4x4's have a skid plate in front, you probably have to remove that before you can get to the filter. It should be on the driver's side of the engine block, unless it has a filter relocation kit installled

Have a look behind the left front bumper, behind where the fog lamps would be. That is where it is located on my 2002 5.4L. Don't ask me why Ford put it there (see my previous thread that describes my oil filter incident) however this seems to be the alternate position for an oil filter. Good luck!!

Also look above the axle on the drivers side. This is were my 2000 4.6L is located. It's hard to see and even harder to get at.

I have basically the same truck and it is not mounted remotely as is Shmucks. It is on the drivers side of the block. You have to reach up after it, but it isn't too difficult to reach.

Good luck,
Doc

I have a 99 4.6 and I reach in through the drivers side wheel well to access my oil filter. This is about the only way I have seen to get at my filter in 122,000 miles worth or oil changes.

Thank you for all of your responses and time. Went out and it is located driver side by the fog lamps! Never would have looked there without your help. Rhanks again to you guys and this site.

Hard to believe that it's way up behind the bumper, however, glad you found it. It does make it easy to access, but if you're doing any off-roading, this filter placement can make for some big problems so be careful, especially if you do have fog lamps.

Cheers
