Tailgate Strut Removal

How to remove the struts on the Aero's tailgate?
Compression is gone on my '93 tailgate struts. Haynes book shows how to remove retaining clip, but no more.

Thanks!

John

I am not absolutely sure if this is correct for the tailgate on the Aero, but on Hood struts one end is cliped and the other end 'screws' out. Then your screw the new one in then clip the other end.

I took a small flat-blade screwdriver, inserted it between the clip and the plastic body of the strut (the later model struts are easier because the have a little indentation where you can easily get under the metal of the clip - on the earlier ones this indent is not there and it is real easy to slip off and gouge yourself in the hand). Once you get the screwdriver blade under the clip, just pry up on it and pull on the fastener at the same time. This will dislodge it from the little ball fitting that holds it. Install the same way - pry it up and slip it over the ball fitting.
