Hey all - got a question re: my 02 F350, 7.3L. On two occassions now, I have turned the key (after glow plugs have warmed) and gotten a screech sound very similair to the sound you get when you turn the key after an engine has already been started. After jumping out of my skin upon hearing the sound, I turned the key again, and the truck fired up, no problem.
Hey, I had the same thing happen on my '00 f-250 w. the 5.4 in it. it scared the crap outta me, but when i turned it over again everything did what it was supposed to. When i got home (1mi down the road) i checked under the hood. Everything was like it should be. J/w what the heck would do that. Any help appretiated
Heater motor?? Turn heater control to off when you shut off motor. Next morning see if it stopped. Then turn on heater switch. If squeels you got it. I have seen these motors squeel just for a minute (will drive you out) then once bearings heat up then nothing. Hope this helps..
It's very odd - it sounds VERY much as though I am turning the key with the engine already started - ya know - when you grind the starter. Two things though: One - our trucks don't have starters (thats my understanding, anyway ), and two, i haven't even started the vehicle yet. Now I'm a general contractor, and I stop\start my truck probably an average of 8-12 times a day. It's only happened twice - probably within the last 4 weeks or so. I've got 98K miles on the truck, so its well used. Just perplexing is all......
the starter gear is most likely just spinning up and hitting the side of the flex plate causing the noise, nothing to really be worried about, may need a new starter soon though if it keeps happening.
most likly the starter going south fix it before you have to pull the trans and replace the flywheel or flex plate. check the fan belt also but what you say it sounds like its a bad drive in the starter not fully engageing the ring gear
