Lifted 2005 Excursion UPDATED

I updated the weblog covering installing and driving the Fab Tech 3.5" lift, specifically new tires and some fine-tuning.

Quiteman,

I'm giving this kit some serious thought. Question though, did you change the front spring bump stop? I thought I read or was told that part of the reason for so little travel up front was to keep the springs from damage by over-arching; I guess thats what you would call it. Not sure if this is true or not. Thanks .

If it's true mine are going to be damaged! So far, with some seriously aggressive driving they have not been noticably "damaged" I recorded the ride heights at several places, and if the springs start sagging, then i will assume they have been damaged. So Far So Good, and what a difference!

Fab Tech did not provide bump-stop extensions or recommend them.

The most important ride improvement was getting the top of the leaf springs more than 3/4" from the bump stop. Before that the truck was constantly bottoming out on even the gentlest off-road travel.

Next most important was the Bilstein shocks. The stock shocks are not as "soft and cushy" OR as firm when they need to be. They are simply not up to the task. Either Bilsteins or Rancho 9000's seem to make everyone smile.

Third, at least in the order i did things, was to get rid of the tiny worthless crap tires that Ford slapped on my 50K truck from the factory, and put the tires that the Engineers designed the suspension for on instead.

Going from stiff, cheap 31"x10.5" tires to compliant solid high-quality 33"x11.5" tires has further smoothed the ride in the straight-ahead, while improving grip and confidence on corners and much smoothed the off-road ride.

The new tires also put my speedometer spot-on, instead of reading too fast...and putting more miles on the truck than actually being driven. The truck was meant to have 285/295 75/16 tires in the first place, and is much happier with them.

Thumbs up

quiteman,

Just read your website update, very imformative thanks. I have a 2004 6.0 limited X and have been waiting for someone to convince me that I can improve the ride and make the X better looking. Your web page did just that. Can you tell me what I can expect to pay if I were to choose the same mods as you? Allen tire is just down the road and it seems you are happy with their work. I think that would be the place to go.

Thanks.

Did the same thing to my 2000 Ex, Hanger/block kit...now she don't bottom out over railroad tracks anymore.
Did the shocks(RS9000X) 285s(BFG's) Airbags(rear) for towing ...its better now but stll needs ART brakes and 8"wide rims.
Quietman, thanks for the pics, Its good to see another Ex, Ex'ed out.
