got a remand motor for a 90 ford f-150,5.0l,was going to retorque all the head bolts, along with the mains and rods before i install it,the motor has about an hr on it.read the torque specs for the motors, and seen diffrent torque settings for diffrent years, the motor casting is a 87.what torque specs do you use on it,87,90?
Seems like the torque specs for the year of the heads would be the thing to go by.
My '86 recommends, according to Haynes, 3 steps to torque head bolts:
step 1 = 85 ft-lbs
step 2 = 95 ft-lbs
step 3 = 105-112 ft-lbs.
The Ford shop manual for that year's specs:
step 1 = 85 ft-lbs
step 2 = 95 ft-lbs
step 3 = 105-122 ft-lbs
Those torque specs that munrow gave are for the 351W. Don't use those specs or you will snap bolts. There is an updated torque spec for the 302 head bolts. Fel-Pro says to torque the bottom side bolts to 68, the top bolts to 80 ft lbs. The rods are 22-24 ft lbs. The mains are 65 ft lbs.
