Heater that flames on.

Ok. Somebody tell me about a heater that blasts hot air as soon as I turn the key. canadian winters can make warming up a half-hour afair, someone give me a hair-brained idea for warmth. I've already considered a kerosene ready heater bolted to the floor in the box with an A/C power inverter and the slider open.

Why go through the trouble of a kerosene heater when a electric heater would work just as well and be a lot safer? A simple hair dryer would give a good idea of how much heat could be produced.

Corvairs had gasoline-fired heaters, but finding one at a wrecking yard might be tough.

use a block heater. plug it in all night and you'll have heat real soon.

You can also use one of those in-line heaters that fits into the heater hose or rad hose. They heat and circulate, giving you warm air right away.

Good Idea. I don't think the DC power in a vehicle could produce decent results. The DC/AC power inverters are getting better but they're not that good. A standard hair dryer can pull about 1500 watts which isn't enough. You must be from Florida.

Not even remotely soon, sorry. Before I had a garage, I plugged in all night every night; no heat.

Thanks, but these things only keep the coolant "slightly" warm for easier starting. I still have to wait and patience is not my strong suit. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks, I think the old beetles had those too. I will definitely look into it. I wonder where I'll be able to locate the unit.

If it "can't be that hard", you do it and tell us all about your fabulous success. Be specific too, with estimated BTU/hr , power requirements CFM from the blower, and last but not least, the dimensions and practicability of your unit. Thanks for the reply, I can hardly wait.

He He do the math - 1500 watts - 125amps @12v - And I doubt if 1500w will fit the "blasts hot air immediately" criteria in a Canadian Winter.

I'm surprised you are not getting heat right away using the preheater. With a good preheater and an electric fan (or at least a really good fan clutch) it should warm right up. A half hour sounds excessive under any condition if it's being driven. Even with sub-zero temps here, a vehicle warms up pretty quick if it's driven.

Thanks for the reply. I just through a number out there (1/2 hour) to make a point. I honestly don't know exactly how long it takes, but even with the motor running for a long time I'm still chilly. I really appreciate your reply and I will check out some of the suggestions I got. Thanks again.

The gas fired heater on old beetles was a rare option. I would not trust using one that old unless it was in mint condition.
