Thinking about buying a new '05 F250 SD, i'm having a rough time deciding on my engine tho. The truck will only be hauling/towing once in a blue moon. And it will mainly be used for show/travel. I plan on putting aftermarket items on it starting with exhaust. So my ? to you V-10 Lovers is how does a V-10 sound with headers/exhaust system? Is it worth the little bit in price over the V-8?
Any other info would be appreciated as i'm having a very rough time deciding.
For very little extra fuel, it will give your truck a level of class that only a powerful motor can do. The 05 Sds are heavy trucks. They added about 300 pounds to get those big payload increases. The 5.4 is an F150 motor. The V10 is a truck motor that makes a truck feel like a muscle car. You have indicated that you want to spend money on aftermarket stuff. You can spend 2 grand on a 5.4 and the first time you sit beside an 05 V10 at the lights, when the lights turn green all your going to see is the V10s tailgate growing smaller. Good luck in whatever you choose and welcome to FTE. Wrenchtraveller.

I have a 2000 V10, but I do not imagine that the sound would be too different from the new trucks. My truck had duals on it when I bought it so I am not completely sure what they are, but I believe that they are flowmasters. I really do not know how to describe the sound. It is nothing like a rumbling V8, but I actually prefer it. It is a VERY aggresive sound with just a little throttle blip. The sound is a bit....higher...than a V8. It almost puts me in mind of an Indy car at times. I have received many compliments on it (exclusively from other guys with trucks...surprise). I actually do not know where one to find this anymore, but I have found websites that actually have sound clips of V10s with duals revving up. Maybe they have them on flowmaster's website. As for whether or not it is worth the increase in price over a V8, my answer would be yes..and worth even more. The amount of fuel economy you sacrifice with the V10 vs the V8(gas) is greatly overplayed I think ...the 5.4 in the Superduty doesn't get THAT much better. When towing, I am reluctant to believe that it would even get as good. I have a pretty heavy foot a lot of times and have always averaged better than 10MPG on my truck's computer. I had a 98 F-150 and it averaged about 13, this is in a much lighter truck. The V10 is a much more potent power plant in the Super Duty, and I feel this would be especially true for you as the 05 has more horses than my 00. For my tastes, the 5.4 is just not enough in the Super Duty. Not only will you have more power for towing and hauling applications, but you will have a much more responsive truck for a very little premium.
the v10 is awsome for the small price increase. spending a lot of cash on after market exhaust and whatever on a 05 multivalve is really not going to get you much of a increase in any thing but noise. look under one cast iron headers, big pipes leading into a 2 into 1, 3 inch exhaust. fred has other posts here about it . he's correct. ford did do major home work in getting the extra ponies out of this motor. what you want to do is a waste of good money immo.
the bseg you will have is worth more then a loud truck
Well it sounds like you've all sold me on the V-10. Sounds like its got the power i'll need when i do have to tow, yet get decent gas mileage for when we just cruise around. Would love to hear a V-10 with a nice exhaust system tho. even if i'm just wasteing money and not getting any HP/Torque gane nothing beats a nice sounding exhaust. If anyone has any links to some sound clips or you have a nice system on your V-10 would love to hear it or at least read about it. Off to the Exhaust forumns. Thnx again for those of you that posted your input was greatly appreciated.
Big Ford , the 05s come with a great sounding exhaust. Do a search in your area and you might find a dealer with one in stock you can test hear . take care, Wrenchtraveller.
