Long, very painful story short, I bought a truck from a guy. it had sheared the distributor shaft pin, and after he replaced the dist. he couldn't get it to run. Well, it was just a tooth off, easy fix. Well, it broke it the pin again not long after I got it running. Is this a freak occurance, or what larger problem could be going on inside?
The distributor shaft also drives the oil pump. The clearances in the oil pump are very tight and small bits of debris in the will jam the pump. Debris in the oil is often caused by fragments from the fiber teeth on the timing gear. It may be a good idea to pull the oil pan and have a look at the oil pump.
FordF150Fixer is slam on, it's the oil pump, which has a history of doing exactly that in 300 I6's.
Dad bought an 82, new (which I have and drive daily now. He left it to me.)
At 26K miles, 14 months old the oil pump locked up, didn't shear dist drive pin spun the hex oil pump drive rod.
Engine siezed, rebuilt, ran to 250K miles before giving up, and I rebuilt it again, now runs fine, should be good for another couple hundred K miles.
this post is a little late, but are the 240's of old prone to the same prob with the oil pump and the thight tolerances, haveing very similar problems right now
