In a couple weeks I will be doing ball joints on my truck and I figured while I had the axles out I would install a powertrax locker in there. I also wanted to throw on a nice aluminum cover for it too with a possible girdle but no one seems to make one for the 50. Does anyone know if the 50's and the 60's use the same diff cover? If I had the money I would put a whole new Dana 60 in but I don’t have it so no one suggest it.
According to an article I read a few months back the 50 and the 60 have the same cover. You could check with the Ford dealer and see if the 1999's cover is the same as a 2002's cover.
I am very unclear on this issue, which is why I posted this topic. I have heard the 44 is the same case as the 50 and the 50 is the same as the 60. I have also heard that the 50 uses the same insides as a 44 and same goes for a 60 but I was able to research that one enough to solve it but I cant find anything solid enough to convince me that the 50 will use either the 44 or the 60. A lot of the websites that carry differential covers are very confusing because some say they will fit 50s 60s 70s some say they will only fit 60s and some even say that they will even fit a 8.8 ford. Then you go to summit or jegs and everything has a specific application and nothing fits anything else. I’m just looking for someone who has experience with this to point me in the right direction. I don’t want to call the local dealer because they are very stupid down there.
The 50 cover is the same as the 60. I have a Dynatrac Dana 60 cover that I have put on my Dana 50 numerous times as I was modifying it to clear my straight tie rod. The Dana 44 cover is different.
ORU has aluminum diff covers in a few different finishes for the SD.
Also, the internals of a 50 (9" ring gear) aren't the same as a 44 (8.5" ring gear ) or a 60 (9.75" ring gear). From the u-joints that connect the inner and outer axle shafts outward the 60 and 50 are the same. The 50's inner axle shafts taper down at the splines and is a 30 spline.
Axle shafts need to be removed in order to remove the steering knuckle.
thank you that was very much appreciated, I was actually hoping that you would post on this one because it was from one of your old posts when I was searching that I learned about the differences of the internals. I was actually thinking about getting something more along the lines of this http://www.currieenterprises.com/ces...E.aspx?id=1937
