I have an 8.8 axle with 3.55 gear ratio's. I am going to build this truck up for some offroading. Therefore, i'll be putting in a locker in the axle, but i want to swap the 8.8" out for the 9" axle before i do this. The only problem is is that the 9" only have 3.50 gears. Will i have a problem with 3.50's in the back, and 3.55's in the front, or wont i even notice it? Or is there a way i can swap the 3.55's in the front for some 3.50's in the back.
You should have a D44 front axle, and I believe you can get 3:50 gears for it. My 79 F-150 had a D44/9" with 3:50 gears. I don't know if being a straight axle D44 vs. TTB D44 makes the gears any different.
Different offset in the gears i beleive is actually better for off roading purposes. my friend uses 4:11's in the fronts with 3:56's in the rear its a beast off road
The front TTB D44 came with the 3.50 gears w/ the 3.50 9" rear, and the 3.54 ratio w/ the 3.55 8.8". I think that the 3.54 D44 /3.50 9" combo is O.K., But I would be real concerned with a large spread like 4.10/3.55. You can damage the transfer case.

The only way I see that working is with different sized tires front and rear to equal out the difference in gears, that or it only uses 4wd in loose dirt and mud.
It may be ok if the diffeent axles can spin to make up the differencebut any tim you have one axle spinning faster than the other as on the concrete you are going to have expensive problems. Tires about 1/2 inch or so shorter may help.
