My 97 Ranger has a "check gage" light that comes on with the key in the on position. That spelling is right too...not gauge but gage. Anyone know what this might be?
That comes on when one of your gauges (ok, gages) is reading high or low. Fuel, alternator, temperature, oil pressure.... If the light is on but all gauges are normal with the truck running, the first thing I would try is disconnecting the battery for a few minutes (after shutting off the truck again, I mean); that may reset whatever is/was bringing it in.

My 99 also has this idiot light, to tell me to check my idiot gages LOL.
As Soksniffer said, it's to wake you up to check your instruments, which you should be scanning every half minute or so anyway, when driving.
If you park your ride on a slope, with the rear end high, with less than 1/4 tank of fuel, it'll come on & stay on for a half mile or so of level driving, before turning off.
If it's on constantly, with all the gages reading normal, then I'd probably suspect the "GEM" or one of it's input electrical connections.
You could drop by your favorite autoparts store for a no cost computer scan to see if it's setting a trouble code that would point you to something more specific.
