My son-in-law has a 99, and it used to have the same problem. There are nylon bushings that are supposed to be between the leaves in the front suspension. His were worn down to the point that the leaves were actually in contact at the ends, where the bushings are supposed to be. We replaced the bushings, and the sound got considerably better. He wound up replacing the shocks, and the rest of the sound went away.
I hope this helps.

Check those leaf pads, and you may also want to have your local spring shop rearch the add-a-leaf to fit. Sometimes aftermarket add-a-leafs have a very high arch to them. The leaves should all have the same arch to them.

My son-in-law found that his clunk got better with the new bushings, but new shocks made it go away completely.
