Hey, I was wondering if this has happened to anyone of you. I think this is a phishing mail of some sort.
Note: I'm putting spaces in the addys and links to disable them.
I just got an email supposedly from Paypal where the subject line claimed I had added "Pheonix @ aol.com" (sic) to my account as an added email. The email contained links which I was supposed to use (I haven't) to access my paypal account and verify or challenge the change.
Aside from Phoenix being misspelled, when I ran my cursor over the URL link, which by the way started with "https// www .paypal. com" (being paypals way of distinguishing itself from fakers), I looked down at the bottom of my browser and saw the link was listed with a server id starting with http:// 211.122 etc.
Also, the text of the message said that "laptopseller @ Yahoo.com " was the added email, not the Phoenix one.
Weeellll, duh. With that many anomolies and me being paranoid, I printed the email, closed the browser, opened another window, went to paypal myself, and checked my account. Everything seems fine. I sent them a heads up with a copy of the email, but got the usual canned reply that means nothing and leaves everything up to me.
I get these emails all the time. You should report them to PayPal's 'email spoof' department. These emails are a big concern. Many people do not think twice, and do "update" their information. I get one a week it seems, and I forward them all to Paypals fraud department.
My wife, who rarely uses ebay, started to respond to a phish. She gave up our password, then decided that the next round of personal information was too suspicious. Our account go hijacked for a day or so, but ebay fixed it all even before I knew about it. I've noticed that since this happened I get 10x the phishing scams in my email every day. She's got us on a sucker list somewhere. The good thing is that she's extremely cautious now about anything she gets from ebay or paypal. Once bitten, twice shy.
I never recieved any mail like that. One thing that does concern me though, is that when I paid for my subscription using paypal, they sent me a receipt via e-mail and they also sent me an e-mail address. The e-mail address seems harmless enough (brguidry @ f150owners . com) but the thing that worries me is that since the system here has been revamped, the e-mail addresses arent free anymore, and I didnt pay for, nor do I have any use for this address. i havent even signed on it yet. What worries me is that paypal has my credit card info and I dont want to be charged for something that I have no use for.
i have gotten a few of them too .. you have to pay attention to the address. people will make the site look similar to the actual site. best thing to do if you do get an e-mail like that and want to check it out to make sure your account really needs something is to sign out of your e-mail and go straight to the paypal site by typing it in. this way you get the real site and can check on your account.
easiest way to remember is they will never ask for personal information credit card #s Bank account #s in a email we used to get these emails a the time but report them to paypal and ebay and dont seem to get them anymore
I got one of these scam Paypal emails yesterday...tried to open it just to see what they were trying to phish...the email wouldn't open, so I deleted it.
Thanks for all the input. An important thing to note was that the emil itself didn't ask for any personal info, and I suspect the forms where the links would have taken me would have though. And the links were disguised as Paypal links starting with https//...
It wasn't until I inspected the links that I saw they didn't appear to be Paypal.
I got one the other day that claimed they were a customer on ebay and wanted a shipping number for the product I sold. Of course that would make somebody nervous if they hadn't sold anything. It had the usual BS link to find out more info on the item, something ebay doesn't do. They list it in the email itself.
So anyway, I forwarded it to ebay hoping they might someday prosecute this guy. They send me an email telling me that A. It not from them. and B. It contained a virus and if I followed the link I should immediately go through my anti-virus program to check for infection.
So now the jerks are not only trying to steal, they're also trying to destroy. There is no punishment that I find too extreme for these people.
