Exhaust manifold gaskets

i have a leak on the passenger side between the head and the manifold. it looks like the manifold it's self has been broken and brazed together, this would cause it to not have a flat edge. so i plan to find a replacement and re-finish it w/eastwood cast iron paint. i'll do the driver side also. i know headers are MUCH better for preformance, but my truck is mostly stock, and i'm keeping it that way. my pressing question is do i get the gasket w/ a heat shield or not. http://www.pickproparts.com/PartsLis...ategoryID=5400

Todd, you may want to find a good manifold to replace the brazed one, but if it is good I would have it resurfaced and then go with the metal heat shields. I myself have had notting but problems with gaskets on the stock manifolds. I have 3 FE's, 2 with the metal heat shields and 1 with headers. My 66 F-100 with headers uses gaskets.

I also have a hard time with the gaskets but i never looked for anything better. I wonder if there are some copper gaskets out there. A shield can't be any worse than a stock gasket. After seeing several heads and manifolds most all of them need resurfaced including mine.
