I know it sounds completely irrational, but - my brother is thinking of swapping out his tired (300,000 + miles!) 300 with a new modular V6 (he's looking for MPG overall.)
He has a manual 5-speed in the truck.
I wasn't sure about the bellhousing bolt-pattern on the modulars. How's that compare with the 300?
My thoughts here are that he would be just as well to go with a 4.6 V8. I don't think he would see much difference in MPG between the modulars.
I know in either case he would get an increase over the 300. The 300 I have (in an E150) get's exactly 13.5 MPG - loaded, unloaded, tailwind or not (but it'll pull anything I hook it to.)
Well i've heard that when they switched to the modular engine in the mid ninetys in the mustangs they used a longer bellhousing behind the 4.6 than behind the 5.0's and therefor lengthened the input on the t45 5 speeds they put behind it. I would think that if you swapped in a 4.6 with its bellhousing that the input shaft of the transmission in the truck would be too short. I've never measured though so maybe someone else can share some info?
