390 ignition system

I'm in the process of rebuilding my 390. I've upped the compression ratio with 360 pistons, a compcam 33-238-4 cam, their recommended valve springs, headers, edelbrock performer intake, holley carb for now. This is a 73 F100 and it has the stock ignition system. I'd like to get away from the points and condensor. I've also heard that changing the ignition system is important for increased performance. I'd like to hear comments and suggestions as I know nothing about aftermarket ignition systems.

Thanks!

Do a search on the subject, plenty of info to be had here... Upgrade to electronics, it's easy and no matter what route you go, you can get away with doing it for anywhere from $30 (used parts)- $80 (new parts). Ford went to electronic ignitions on these motors in the mid 70's, so parts are readily available over the counter.

I just replaced my cap and rotor with the cap, rotor, and spacer (plastic one from Advance Auto) for a 1978 F-150 351W. See the tech article on-line here for more info. The plastic cap adapter did not fit to my satisfaction, so I plastic wire tied it so there is no movement and teh whole assembly is held down tight. I did bend teh tabs down a bit more to help too. I think maybe I will track down a metal one, if thatis what MSD sells.

Also, I went to the cheap 8mm wires.

Made a big difference, the stumble at 40-45 mph that has been driving me crazy has gone away! I did not replace the points and I am gapping the plugs the same (.035).
