I'm under the impression that the factory exhaust on my truck is pretty restrictive. I'm having a hard time squeezing the cash out of my wife, she controls the bank accounts, for a new exhaust system. In the mean time I was taking a look at my factory exhaust and its not that small of a pipe. How much benefit would I can cutting out the muffler and welding in a piece of stainless thus straight piping the factory exhaust
A HUGE benefit! If she has sensitive hearing like my wife does, get yourself a Walker BTM (big truck muffler) for around $50.00 and install it. Hold it up before you install it and you can see right through it like a glass pack. 3.5" inlet and outlet and no reduction in size as the exhaust goes through. It will install with a minimum of fuss and your truck will thank you for it.
I don't know where you live, so I can't help you there. I bought mine at NAPA, but only because they were convenient, definately not the cheapest. I don't remember the exact price, but I think $56.00
We had the muffler taken off my our '02 PSD. They just took it out and welded a new piece in place. We didn't want it to get any louder, and it worked out well. It didn't get any louder except now you can hear the turbo wind through the tailpipe when your standing right there. We kept the cat, and all that other crap on there too. Thats cheaper than getting a new hiflo muffler being as the sound didn't really get louder just the turbo noise.
The part number for the Walker BTM is 21470. NAPA uses the same number. I just put one of these on my truck this week and I love it. I started a thread about it and have had a few comments that you might want to check out. It is listed as "Just installed my new Walker BTM and WOW!".
