Cracked Mirror

I have a 2004 F-350 with 24000 miles (built Aug 2003) and the heated tow mirrors. This winter has been the usual cold (anywhere from 30 to -10F) here and no different than last winter.

Yestereday, I looked at the passenger side mirror and noticed a 6 inch crack in the glass! I looked things over carefully and there was no damage to the housing and no impact damage apparent on the glass. The temperature has been about 10-15F the last 4 days so it hasn't been colder than usual.

Anyway, took it to the dealer and they said it isn't covered under warranty.

Has anyone else had mirror problems?

Thanks,
M

Sounds like a looser with respect to a dealer. I had an 84 Chevy Celebrity wagon that the windshield had a large 10" crack start from the top IIRC. Middle of summer, drove home in driveway, go to leave 30 minutes later and it is cracked. Dealer said there was no reason for it to crack, must have been stressed by adhesion to body, they replaced under warranty.

If your dealer isn't interested in keeping you happy over a inexpensive item such as a mirror then I would be really concerned with respect to possible future more serious $ warranty issues.

If he didn't write a ticket on it stating not covered by warranty (getting it in the system) then I would go find another dealer and see if they are looking for a future customer and are willing to help you out.

I believe the heating element is glued to the glass; who is to say there wasn't some defect and the heating cooling created the crack at some unseen stress point.

They're heated so it isn't like you were hacking with an ice scraper. They're on the backside so not likely they were hit while you're going down the road.

Good luck.

Bob

Exactly - I have never had to scrape my mirrors, even in the iciest conditions. And as it is somewhat rural here, and the wife and I have always parked in the back 40 in parking lots to avoid "inconsideration dings" I am sure the mirror wasn't hit by anyone else.

Ah well. It's only a mirror - not a big $ item.

Tx!

I had problems with my mirrors when i first got my truck, namely that i couldn't judge distances and wound up smacking both of them on concrete pillars in my parking garage. Been cracked ever since, oh well.

You should find out if the dealer is lying or just doesn't know. I don't understand how a dealer wouldn't know that this is definitely covered though. If there is no "impact point" it is covered. This happened to mine last year and the dealer where I bought it didn't bat an eyelash when they saw it. The heated mirrors had problems with stress cracks from the heat and cold. A scumbag dealer in Michigan denied me initially when I was on vacation because they said I had an impact point which was complete BS. I was sick and didn't have the time to fight with them. They probably knew it too.
